Welcome to our New Hawthorn Blog
Dear Parents and Friends
Welcome to our new Hawthorn webpage and to our new Blog, where we will be posting interesting essays and sharing links to articles on education and parenting.
As you know, two of Hawthorn’s Pillars are: the all-girls advantage and the small class sizes. By choosing Hawthorn for your daughters’ education you are actually giving them a significant advantage.
To confirm this, let me share with you a recent study done by the HERI ( Higher Education Research Institute) at University of California, Los Angeles:
Fostering Academic and Social Engagement: An Investigation into the Effects of All-Girls Education in the Transition to University, published by NCGS.
This study concludes that girls graduating from all-girls schools have a substantial advantage to those who graduate from co-ed schools.
“In summary, the researchers concluded that when compared to their female peers at coed schools, girls’ school graduates:
- Have stronger academic skills
- Are more academically engaged
- Demonstrate higher science self-confidence
- Display higher levels of cultural competency
- Express stronger community involvement
- Exhibit increased political engagement”
For deeper insight into the findings, you can listen to the principal investigator Dr. Tiffani Riggers-Piehl discuss it on the NCGS podcast: PEP Talks: Podcast on Educational Possibilities
